Dog days of Summer

Dog days of Summer
Chairs at the swimming hole, Middlebury Vermont.

I am a bit behind on a lot of things it seems. It's not necessarily a bad predicament, having enough work to accumulate. I have been spending more time thinking about my personal work lately, meaning the photographs I make on my own time and for my own enjoyment. My goal has been to separate the process from the results. I am focused on the practice of photography, and its a refreshing change of pace.

It means I am also a bit behind on editing my own work. I did not look at any photographs in July, just stowed them away on my hard drive when I had the chance. Now I have a big envelope of work prints to play with this weekend. Last year I did a workshop down in Georgia at The Humid (thanks to the Vermont Arts Council). Mark and Irina had a giant metallic whiteboard and it was so fun to quickly move work around. It's different to view the photographs as a group of prints in this way, somehow its like seeing an object in your peripheral vision... but when you turn, or look at singular image, the recognition disappears. This weekend I am hoping to reclaim a bit of space in the barn, pin some work up for now (need to order the metal sheets still).

The plan is to use that physical edit, photographs on the wall, as a test to see how my editing changes. I have been thinking about making a zine and that would be a great way to slow cook the layout. Until then, here are a few more photographs from these hot, humid dog days of summer.
