The cameras change, from 35mm digital to medium format to 4x5 sheet film. The setting changes, from a studio to a field to a back porch. Sometimes a portrait takes a fraction of a second, sometimes considerably longer. I work with available light or build it from scratch, making those choices in service of the environment and the story.

I’ve photographed people who spend much of their lives in front of a camera and people who rarely find themselves there. Each brings a different challenge, and finding what allows something unexpected to emerge is one of my favorite parts of making a portrait.

The tools and technique are never really the point. A good portrait comes from connection, intuition, and an unspoken dialogue, the small exchange that happens on either side of the lens.
